I am a big okonomyaki fan, but also a vegan - so am always searching for vegan versions. Its basically the same, using egg substitute and vegan versions of the sauces and can be made either with or without vegan substitutes for the shrimp, pork etc.
The best one I have had outside of Japan is at a little restaurant in Brisbane called Kuan Yin Tea House - 198 Wickham St, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Ph 07 3252 4557.
It is served on a sizzling hot square grill plate and is fantastic. It includes the vegan shrimp and also a little shredded lettuce on top. On the menu it comes as 'The Delicate Plate' with the Okonomyaki and a huge Japanese clear soup full of vegetables, vegan fish and prawns etc. But it can also be ordered by itself.
Just thought this would be interesting for the website. Kellie Blume

Following the Kansai-style recipe on this site, I have managed to make a KILLER okonomiyaki for dinner.
My style is semi-vegetarian... I leave out the pork and I used Tofurky Italian Sausage instead.... and fried onions used for salads instead of tempura bits. It is a very easy, very tasty and filling dinner. Go for it. | | | Post Reply

I don't recall the place, but instead of the pancake being flat, it was more of a stack (possible prepared using those metal rings). The dimensions of the stack was about half of a Campbell's soup can. It was very moist on the inside and the texture was very smooth and delightful. Anyone know if there is a name for this version? | | | Post Reply

It was pretty low quality, though, and thrown together quickly. I studied abroad in Japan the following year, and first had it at a restaurant in Kyoto whose name I can't recall. I immediately resolved to learn how to make the stuff, and had it as often as possible (this was helped by the Japanese students in our dorm throwing an okonomiyaki party, where they taught everyone how to make it).
As for preferences, I like modern-yaki, with yakisoba noodles, and prefer pastrami as my meat topping.
Anyway, is there any chance of the server spatulas making their way into the shop? I'd order some of those. | | | Post Reply

One okonomiyaki ingredient that was very popular in the area of Japan where I lived was/is cubes of mochi. Just cut the hard mochi into small cubes and add them to the batter. They soften as they are cooked. Very very delicious!! | | | Post Reply
